New Mom Killed at Home. Months Later, No Arrests
By Taylor Bennett. Oct 25, 2026
Brooke Hanlon was killed at home before her daughter’s first birthday. Months later, a newly released autopsy confirms how the New Jersey therapist died, while authorities have announced no arrest.
The report records sharp-force injuries as the cause of the 35-year-old Chester mother’s death and classifies it as homicide, consistent with the finding authorities had already announced. It contains extensive redactions and does not identify a suspect. The examination took place June 7, the day after Hanlon was found, and was certified September 20, according to PEOPLE.
Her daughter turned one in July. Family remembrances describe Hanlon as a devoted mother and a counselor whose work focused on children, adults and families.
A Call From Inside the Home
Police responded to the home June 6 following a report of a cardiac or respiratory arrest, according to Patch’s account of the initial response. They instead found that Hanlon had suffered fatal injuries.
Her husband, James, who uses the name Conor, called 911 after finding her. Authorities have not publicly named him as a suspect or announced any criminal charge against him. He has denied involvement in her death.
Her Work Centered on Helping Families
Hanlon spent part of her childhood in the Chester area before pursuing her education. Her studies and later counseling work brought her to Boston, where she met her future husband.
According to her obituary as reported by Patch, she earned psychology degrees and later worked as a child and family therapist.
Her volunteer commitments included supporting children in India, tutoring during a period in Spain, helping raise funds for schools in Uganda and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
She later returned to New Jersey and worked as a licensed mental-health counselor in Bernardsville. In July 2025, she and Conor welcomed their daughter.
The Investigation
In September, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office told Patch there was no update to provide. PEOPLE’s October 22 report said the prosecutor’s office declined to discuss developments and that no arrests had been announced.
Her family has publicly expressed confidence in law enforcement’s investigation. Officials have asked anyone with information about her death or suspicious activity in the surrounding area to contact investigators.
