Woman Killed, Six Wounded in Spirit Halloween Shooting; Suspect Sought
By Taylor Bennett. Nov 2, 2026
A woman was killed and six other people were wounded when gunfire broke out inside a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, on October 30, leaving investigators searching for a suspect as families prepared for Halloween celebrations.
Police identified the woman as Constance Hages, 31. Her relatives told detectives she was pregnant; police said confirmation would be left to the coroner. She died at the scene, while the six other people who were shot were taken for treatment.
By the following afternoon, three remained in critical condition: a 16-year-old boy and men ages 19 and 32. A 23-year-old man was seriously injured but stable, according to CBS Sacramento’s account of the police update. Two other men, ages 19 and 43, had been treated and released.
Detectives said the shooting appeared to stem from a targeted incident involving one suspect inside the seasonal costume store. No arrest had been announced in the October 31 reporting, and investigators had not publicly identified an intended target or explained the relationship, if any, between the shooter and the victims.
Shoppers Ran From the Store
Officers and firefighters responded around 8:30 p.m. to Solano Town Center, a shopping mall on Travis Boulevard near Interstate 80. Police Chief Dan Marshall told reporters later that night that the shooting appeared to have been centered on the Halloween retailer.
Michelle Marie Anderson, who was dropping off her niece at the mall, told ABC7 that she heard a young person calling for help outside. He appeared to have been shot and was getting away from the store, she said.
“Everybody was running,” Anderson told the station.
Another mall employee, Melanie Gainey, told CBS Sacramento that her daughter had been inside Spirit Halloween about 20 minutes before the shooting. Gainey said she was praying for the victims and their families.
The FBI’s Sacramento office said it responded to the scene and was assisting Fairfield police. Detectives were reviewing video and other evidence in an effort to identify the gunman and reconstruct what happened inside the store.
Mall Event Canceled, Store Closed for the Season
The shopping center said it would remain open during regular hours on October 31, but canceled its scheduled Mall-O-Ween celebration, which had been set for 4:30 p.m. The cancellation distinguished the family event from the mall’s overall operating status.
Spirit Halloween said the affected store would not reopen for the rest of the season. The company said the closure was intended to respect the people affected and support the ongoing investigation, and deferred questions about the attack to local police.
“We extend our condolences to the families and individuals whose lives have been altered by these terrible events,” the company said in a statement reported by CBS Sacramento. It said its teams were providing full assistance to investigators.
Fairfield police acknowledged that the shooting had created fear during a weekend of planned gatherings. “We understand that an incident of this nature is frightening and deeply unsettling,” the department said in its October 31 statement.
Police asked anyone with information to come forward as the search for the suspect continued.
